HERO Marshals’ Post

Coming up for 2008

The combination of Ireland and Scotland to celebrate 10 years of “The Malts” gave us a little bit of everything – not least the weather!   Some glorious sunshine, some torrential rain, the occasional pelting of hailstones – nothing could dampen the spirits of those taking part.   Competitors acclaimed the route as superb and I think it is fair to say that the event was a great success.

Once again, many thanks to all the marshalling crews who turned out over the course of the six days; efficient as always, your enthusiasm always gives our events a boost.

MARSHAL OF THE YEAR

Back in 2002 I was very pleased to be able to offer for the first time the InCompass Marshal of the Year trophy for HERO marshals who we felt had made outstanding contributions in performing their duties.   We have had some very worthy recipients since then, and I am very pleased to say that the winner for this year is GEORGE COWLING.   George will be known to many of you, and I can say that he is invariably cheerful – even in the worst of weathers! – and his record is exemplary.   He had been out on every LE JOG in the past 10 years, and has only missed one running of the Malts due to family bereavement.   The trophy (together with a bottle from Peter to fill it) was presented on the Friday evening of the Malts when we enjoyed a superb buffet and local entertainment at the Garth Hotel in Grantown.   Many thanks, George, and keep up the good work!

HERO’s Summer Trial 24th to 26th July

It’s full steam ahead for our new event;   based in Malvern, Worcester, we have an interesting three days planned along the lines of the Malts – very sociable, daylight only with tulip navigation, an ideal introduction for the newcomer but competitive enough to satisfy the experienced crews.

Calling all marshals!   We have a lot of marshals who have not been able to come out on events like the Malts, but who turn out regularly on LE JOG.   Here is your opportunity to help out – in daylight! – at a time of year when we could reasonably expect the weather to be a little warmer and kinder to us.

Our route for the Summer Trial on the first day (Thursday 24 July) takes us eastwards from Malvern in a big loop via Stowe and Gaydon.   On Friday we head west via Shelsley Walsh into Wales to tackle twisty scenic roads around the Elan Valley and Abergwesyn.   Saturday sees another foray into Wales, but approaching through the glorious countryside of rural Herefordshire and the Wye valley before going on to explore the ups and downs of the Brecon Beacons; there’s an interesting visit to the leading single estate vineyard in the UK on the way back!

I am keen to hear from marshalling crews who would like to help, whether for just a single control or maybe for two or three during the course of the event.   It doesn’t matter if you are a novice or experienced marshal, you will be most welcome.   We always like to have new people joining us, so why not give it a try?

Get in touch, preferably by email (to make it easier for me to keep a record), and let me know where you are and when you are available, and we’ll take it from there.

LE JOG 6th to 9th December 2008

It may be just over six months away, but it’s amazing how quickly the time flies when you are organising an event.   The change of date for Wales Rally GB means that once again we are in competition for marshalling crews.   However, that has not affected us unduly in the past, and I do hope that we shall see many familiar faces out there this December, and I look forward to welcoming newcomers as well.

The route this year is up the western side of the country, overnighting just north of Chester and at Carlisle, and it promises to be equally as tough as last year, with maybe just a few new challenges!

LE JOG is a tough event for both competitors and officials – and I include marshals in that.   Over the past few years we have been greatly indebted to those marshalling crews who are prepared to travel with the event, and without whom it would be impossible to man the number of controls we have in Scotland which help make the event such a challenge.   Even having these travelling crews, we need almost 500 marshals along the way.

If you would like to help out on this year’s event, whether covering one or two controls or travelling right up to John O’Groats itself, please do get in touch with me, preferably by email.

KEEPING IN TOUCH!

The introduction of email has totally changed the way everyone works, and yes, it does save us so much time and cost.   Whilst I appreciate that not everyone does have an email address, that is the exception rather than the rule these days.

Could I ask PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE would you all let me know your current email addresses – so many have changed and I end up with a mountain of mail delivery failure notices whenever   I try to send a general mailing out.

Contact me now – today would be good! – and let’s make sure we stay in touch.
