Scottish Malts Reliability Trial and Touring Trial
13-17 September 2004

The Scottish Malts will run for the seventh time in 2004. Since 1998, 'the Malts' has established itself as Scotland's premier classic car rally, and its longest rally of any kind. It draws participants from as far afield as Africa, Asia, the Americas and Australasia. This is not to mention large contingents from Germany, Holland and other European countries.

The seventh Scottish Malts Reliability Trial will have all the flavour and distinction of its predecessors: a measured blend of wonderful driving roads, stunning scenery, great tests and enjoyable regularities. Plus, of course, our own magic ingredient: visits to the distilleries producing some of Scotland's finest malt whisky, with plenty of time to sample the wares when the day's driving is done.

The 2004 event will continue with the Scottish Malts Classic Car Tour, so successfully launched in 2003, and which provides owners of more precious classics with a gentler scenic journey through Scotland, free of the pressures of competition but touching base with the Reliability Trial for key events. The Tour will take in some special visits of its own and but and will again be limited to just 40 cars.

Whilst there will be whisky galore, competitors can also drink in many of Scotland's more sober pleasures, including a magnificent series of lochs (with a monster test at Loch Ness), Scone Palace, Eilean Donan and Inveraray Castles, and the beautiful Isle of Skye and the Summer Isles. And great news for shoppers! After a successful stop there last year, we shall once again be visiting the fantastic Johnsons of Elgin Cashmere Centre.

The Malts is also pleased to announce that the 2004 event will finish at the world famous Gleneagles hotel, where participants will enjoy a superb evening banquet with fireworks, and a champagne breakfast prizegiving. What is more, participants can also enjoy the Malts' special rates on one of Gleneagles' three renowned golf courses.

The event itself will last five and a half days, allowing you to fit the whole trip, home to home, within one week's holiday. Starting in Edinburgh, the event includes overnight halts at Aviemore, Inverness (two nights), and Fort William.

Don't miss the great treats we've got in store for you this time. Get your entry in early!

The Reliability Trial

The Scottish Malts Reliability Trial will closely follow the format of past editions. Each day, you will cover a route of around 200 to 250 miles, mostly on quiet roads through some of Scotland's most remote and stunning scenery.

The time schedule will be easy, and there are no lateness penalties on the link sections. Navigation will be simple, by means of a detailed road book using the easy-to-follow Tulip diagrams.

During each day, there will be a number of special tests on private asphalt. Mostly, these are enjoyable, open handling and manoeuvrability tests against the clock, with a few novelties of our own devising thrown in. On these, you are pitted only against the other cars in your class – we don't expect a vintage Bentley to match a Mini Cooper S.

Each day, too, there will be two or three regularity sections on interesting driving roads, again always on asphalt. On these, you have to maintain a moderate set speed. Navigation and timekeeping are by means of HERO's simple Jogularity system.

On the Reliability Trial, there is no outright winner. Gold, Silver and Bronze medals are awarded to crews who do well against the standard set for cars in their own class. The Classic Malts' most coveted award is the Marque Team Trophy, going to the best team of three cars of the same make and model.

The entry list is divided into six age categories:

  • Vintage (1919-1930),
  • Post-Vintage (1931-1940), Wartime and Post-war (1941-52),
  • Fifties (1953-59), Sixties (1960-67), and Post Historic (1968-1974).

Older cars have an easier time schedule.

The Classic Car Tour

If you decide to join The Scottish Malts Classic Car Tour, you will cover a shorter route – on most days, around 150 miles. You will receive a detailed road book, together with simple directions and touring notes on places of interest along the way.

You are completely free to visit whichever attractions you want, choosing from the dozens of sightseeing opportunities that are available to you each day. But don't try to squeeze in too much if you want to arrive at the overnight halts at a reasonable hour. And be sure not to miss out on the distilleries!

Instead of travelling on your own, we also encourage participants to team up with friends and to travel round in a group.

On both events, there will be a lunch halt at an interesting venue each day, and on most evenings everyone will gather for one of the Malts' popular social events.

The Malts Rack

Highly praised following its introduction last year, the Malts Rack is back for the 2004 event.

The rack is a handsome hand-made wooden presentation case with space for a miniature bottle from each of the distilleries visited. Each crew member receives a rack at the start, so you can build up your collection as you go. By Gleneagles you'll have a magnificent souvenir of the event – provided you have not drunk all the contents!

Your Hotels

Where they are available, we use larger hotels of full international standard. At other overnight halts, you will stay in smaller and simpler hotels and guest houses. In all cases, we will have inspected the establishment and assured ourselves that it is of a good standard, with clean and comfortable rooms.
