INCA TRAIL CLASSIC RELIABILITY TRIAL AND 4X4 ADVENTURE DRIVE

6 October - 29 November 2001

SUPPLEMENTARY ODOMETERS

We strongly recommend that all participants in both the Classic Reliability Trial and the 4x4 Adventure Drive fit a supplementary odometer (otherwise known as a tripmeter) to their vehicle. Although this is not essential it will make life a lot easier when following the Road Book that will be issued. This supplementary odometer should be able to be easily calibrated and should read to a higher degree of accuracy than the average vehicle odometer. The Classic Reliability Trial Regulations penalise certain types of supplementary odometers in Article 3.14. Please read and understand this article before deciding what sort of unit to fit.

On the event all of the official vehicles will use the Brantz range of electronic tripmeters, and we recommend these to you. They are easy to fit and to use, accurate, and relatively inexpensive. They are available to Inca Trail participants from Geoff Crossland at Brent Communications (the manufacturers) at a 10% reduction from Recommended Retail Price. The units we recommend are:

International 1 - a basic single readout LED display that is perfectly adequate for both events and is unpenalised on the Classic Reliability Trial.

RRP £112.80 Inca Trail Price £101.52

International 2 - this unit has two independent LED readouts so that you can run a total distance on one display and zero the other at each junction (using a remote button) to display an intermediate distance - the Road Book will normally give both of these distances. As this type of tripmeter has obvious operational advantages, Classic Reliability competitors will be penalised 5 seconds per Timing Point for using one of these.

RRP £150.40 Inca Trail Price £135.36

Retrotrip 2 - This is an electromechanical unit which has a twin display made up of "clicking digits". It is not quite as versatile as the International 2 (or an old fashioned Halda Twinmaster) but is a relatively inexpensive way of giving a period feel to a classic rally car, and of providing a twin readout display with no penalty.

RRP £206.80 Inca Trail Price £186.12

Retrotrip 3 - This is similar in operation to the Retrotrip 2 but provides a triple readout with a twin calibration. Because of this, we class it as a device capable of computing speed and it would thus attract a penalty of 15 seconds per Timing Point and is therefore not recommended.

RRP £237.35 Inca Trail Price £213.62

Sensors - All of the above units require a sensor. There are a range of different sensors depending on the sort of speedometer drive you have on your vehicle. From experience we would advise you to avoid the "Gearbox Sensors" if possible and use either a "Prescaling Interface" wired into the vehicle manufacturers electronic speedometer (modern cars) or a "Standard Universal Speedometer Sensor" fitted into the speedometer cable.

RRP from £24.67 Inca Trail Price from £22.20
