In an exciting finale, Jayne Wignall, navigated this year by Fred Bent, claimed her "Hat-trick" of Gold Medals, having competed - and won gold - on each of the three Classic Malts Reliability Trials that have been run. The crew just managed to outdrive Newman / Newsham on the last day, finishing on four fewer total penalties, despite a five penalty deficit at the end of Day 5. Colin Francis with John Blankley secured a Gold Medal, too, despite having apparently missed his chance on Day 1, when interim results showed him to have dropped to Silver. But Colin spotted a timesheet error, and was quickly upgraded back to Gold again. He is trying hard to stop himself querying this satisfying final result! Thursday morning's positions in the competition for the Marque Team Prize, to be awarded with the Talisker Trophy, presented by Classic Malts, were overturned with the sudden enforced retirement from the event of Stan Williams' 1937 Alvis 4.3 Charlesworth Saloon. The crew and those from other passing cars were unable with hand-held fire extinguishers to prevent the total loss of the vehicle, and the fire took hold so swiftly that there was no time to rescue personal possessions, though both crew members were able to escape without injury. As navigator, Tony Davies ruefully commented the following morning, "Not the kind of thing you'd want to go through every day". This left the way open for two teams of sidescreen TRs. The main contenders for the Marque Team Prize were the Triumph Team of Jan van Geen/ Julienne Straatman (TR3A); Malcolm McKay / Tony Caldwell (TR2); and David Redwood / Mrs Annie Redwood (TR3A). They and a second team of TRs made a splendid approach to the event finish, coming to the line in two rows, three abreast across the hotel car park. However, their arrival was not without the expense of much midnight oil being burned. Malcolm McKay had steering problems by the end of Thursday, with a piece of scaffolding pole being pressed into use to help the car survive to the finish. David Redwood's TR 3A, meanwhile, had completed the final hundred miles of Thursday's leg with no oil pressure, and suspected oil pump failure. At 3.00am a new pump finally arrived in Oban, just in time to be fitted to the car. The engine started successfully, but had an ominous knocking for the final day, though their progress was good enough to allow the team to arrive intact at Edinburgh within schedule for Friday afternoon's finish, and to claim the coveted award.
