Dear Competitor

Welcome to the Sixth Scottish Malts Reliability Trial and the First Classic Car Tour. This letter is the first Official Bulletin of the event. You will receive these Bulletins periodically before and during the rally. They contain important information (including amendments) that you should thoroughly read and understand. I suggest that you keep them all in a safe place so that you can refer back to them as and when it is necessary.

Many of the items below refer only to the Reliability Trial (RT). Other items are for all crews including those on the Classic Car Tour (CCT).

Bulletin No 1 (1 page, 2 sides) - 28 February 2003

4 Team Entries (RT Article 10) A Team Entry Form is attached. Please use this if you have not already entered a team on your individual Entry Form. We hope all competitors will wish to join or form teams of three cars, as follows:
(i) Marque Team: please contact other drivers of the same make and ideally same model of car, to form a one-make team
(ii) National Team: if there are three or more other crews of your nationality or permanently resident in your country, please contact them to form a National Team. This applies to English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish crews, as well as others.
(iii) Club or ecurie team: if there are entrants from your club, or a group of your friends, why not form a club or ecurie team? You may invent your own ecurie name for this purpose.

You may be in one team of each type. To enter a team, please return a completed Team Entry Form along with the appropriate fee to the HERO office. If you are not in teams by the time of Documentation, we will try and link you up with other crews to form one. A list of telephone numbers of the other drivers is enclosed, to help you contact them.

5 Maps (Article 12) The only map definitely required by participants is the Ordnance Survey Motoring Atlas of Britain, 2003 edition. For those who wish to follow the route in more detail, a list of the OS 1:50,000 Landranger maps which cover the route is shown on the attached order form from our official map supplier, Rallymaps, The Gate Lodge, 107 Sydenham Ave, Belfast, BT4 2DP, tel (+44/0) 2890 808808, fax (+44/0) 2890 808809.

Rallymaps are also able to supply a fully marked up Map Book of the route containing full route details, including major controls, tests and regularity routes, although not the location of the intermediate regularity timing points and secret checks. For each overnight halt, a detailed street map will be included showing event hotel locations (this will also be in the Road Book). This map book is thoroughly recommended by the organisers, but it is not an official rally document and does not contain formal instructions or information. This can also be ordered on the attached form. A special version of the map book will be provided t o Classic Car Tour participants, included in their entry fee, in lieu of a tulip road book.

6 Charity Shield (Article 23) This important trophy is awarded to the participant on either the RT or CCT raising the largest sum for one or more recognised charities, in connection with their entry. All money raised must go to the charity or charities concerned; participants may not retain any proportion to cover their own costs. Please make an effort - participants in LE JOG, Classic Malts and other HERO events have raised close to £1,000,000 since 1993. The relevant form is attached.

7 Insurance (Article 25) It is compulsory for all participants on both the RT and the CCT to carry third party insurance valid for the event and for at least two members of the crew. Please note that there are two possibilities for this :

(a) You can arrange for your own insurance for the rally. In this case
(i) you must verify with your insurance company that your policy covers your participation in a timed motor rally
(ii) this must cover at least two members of the crew to drive the car
(iii) you will have to sign a declaration at Documentation that you are covered by insurance as required in this article

(b) Alternatively, you can be covered by the Alexander Forbes Scheme (previously the Bradstock Scheme). This provides third party only insurance cover to participants, at a rate expected to be no more than £60 per car, although we are hoping this to be nearer the sum of £20 per car (price to be confirmed by Alexander Forbes on 1st April). Here is the procedure :
(i) If you comply with the Alexander Forbes Declaration as shown in the Regulations, all you need do is sign this declaration at Documentation and pay the relevant fee.
(ii) If you are in any doubt whether you comply with the declaration, you should contact Alexander Forbes Risk Services directly on tel (+44/0) 161-228 0721, fax (+44/0) 161-236 0995, or email [email protected] before Friday 25th April 2002.

8 Navigation Practice and Training Day HERO are holding this event, aimed at beginners, on Sunday 13 April – see info sheet enclosed.

9 Novices Briefing Prior to the start, during the afternoon of Sunday 11 May, we will be running a Novices Briefing. This will consist of a classroom-style briefing by experienced competitors and an optional familiarisation run in the Edinburgh area.

10 Alcohol No member of a competing crew may, on any day during the running of the event, consume alcohol of any kind prior to completing that day’s run, nor drive a vehicle of any kind after consuming alcohol. The penalty for this is IMMEDIATE EXCLUSION.

11 Ferries In conjunction with the organisers, Allsports Logistics are offering special deals on ferries from continental Europe and Ireland. We include a Ferry Information and Booking Form for all crews resident overseas. If anyone else would like to take advantage of these offers, please contact the HERO office for a form. These forms should be returned directly to Allsports Logistics, and not to the HERO office. Please note the new Zeebrugge-Rosyth service.

12 Cambridge Racing Car Transport and Recovery Service We are pleased to be able to offer this to participants – see attached info sheet and booking form.

That’s all for now. If you have any further questions about the event, please do not hesitaste to contact the HERO office.
