Day 2 - Cork to Killarney
The Day's route took crews away from the City of Cork along the West Cork Coast, en route to the harbour of Glandore before starting the twisting challenging coastal Toe Head Regularity Section taking competitors through to their lunch halt at the Eccles Hotel, Glengarriff. The afternoon run was spent in the Beara pennisula with a couple of Observed Regularity Sections on tiny roads before passing through the famous Tim Healy Pass and onto two regularities on two classic coastal special stages, Ardgroom and Cod's Head.
John Brown found out what all that clear liquid was falling from the sky in the afternoon - he passed a sign saying "Care Road Cleaning in Progress"! Unfortunately the day took three casualties: Graham Whitaker and Bill Currie's Hornet Special with a broken front axle; Hanns Werner Wirth and Ursula Schmitt's Jaguar MkIX after a minor bump; and finally, Chris and Connie Podger's Alvis. However, some people have all the luck. Car 78, Neil and Ian Beresford in their 1965 Austin Healey 3000 with a crumpled wing and dented radiator found local support, "I've got one of those (radiator)on the shelf in my garage and my pal can fix that wing". Hey presto - instant re-build job! So after Day 2 Geoff Stewart and Peter Murray have overtaken Paul and Jayne Wignall with 77 penalty marks to 142, with the Harrisons, in their fantastic TR4, hot on their heels …or should I say tyres with 161 marks. |
