The Magic of Scotland

The combination of challenging roads, imaginative tests, spectacular scenery, good company, Scottish hospitality, wonderful venues and the good weather that early May often brings to Scotland all helped to make the 2006 HERO Scottish Malts Classic Reliability Trial and Tour one of the best events in the eight years since the “Malts” was first held. The 2007 event aims to go one better.

Starting from the esplanade at Stirling Castle on Monday 30th April 2007, the event will take crews via Loch Lomond and Blair Castle to the first of four nights at the Macdonald Highland Resort in Aviemore. The route on days two, three and four of the 2007 event will be in the form of a clover leaf as the crews travel North East, North West and to Speyside, with each day taking in different aspects of Scotland. Friday 4th May, day five, will take the event from Aviemore to the finish at the world famous Falkirk Wheel, a spectacular feat of modern engineering which lifts boats vertically between two canals and replaces a flight of 17 locks. Following the final driving test crews can relax in the visitors centre or take a trip on the wheel, before returning to Stirling for a banquet and awards presentation inside Stirling Castle itself.

Test venues and roads not used on previous “Malts” were incorporated into the 2006 route, and the format for the 2007 will allow the introduction of yet more new roads and venues. The tradition of main controls and tests being sited at distilleries, stately homes and castles will continue, as will the issuing of miniatures at ten specific locations. The Provisional Programme for 2007 takes in such locations as Blair Castle; Balnagown Castle (new to the Malts in 2006 and quickly established as a favourite); Balmoral Castle; distilleries such as Edradour, Glenturret, Glenlivet, Glenfarclas, Dhullus Dhu; Johnstons of Elgin; plus locations and venues new for 2007.

The Reliability Trial

The 2007 Scottish Malts Reliability Trial will follow the successful format of past events with competitors covering approximately 200 – 230 miles each day through some of the most remote and spectacular scenery Scotland can offer. The time Schedule is not too demanding, and lateness penalties don’t apply at the end of each leg, provided of course, you are within the maximum lateness allowed for your class.

Navigation will be by means of a detailed road book using easy-to-follow Tulip diagrams, and Rallymaps will once again be making available their comprehensive map-book.

As usual there will be a number of special driving tests on private land. These are enjoyable manoeuvrability tests against the clock mainly on asphalt. On these, you are pitted only against the other cars in your class – we don’t expect a vintage Bentley to be pitted against a Mini Cooper S or a Porsche. Each day there will be two or three regularity sections, always on asphalt, intended to provide competitors with demanding but enjoyable driving. On these, you have to maintain a moderate set speed. Navigation and timekeeping are by means of HERO’s simple Jogularity system.

Categories & Awards

The entry list for 2007 is divided into the six age categories from vintage to modern classics. These will be further divided into classes defined by body type and engine size.

Competitors compete for Gold, Silver and Bronze medals, which are awarded to crews who do well against the standard set for cars in their own class. Class and overall awards will also be presented to the best performing crews. Regarded by regular entrants as the most coveted award, the Marque Team Trophy will be awarded to the best team of three cars of the same make and model. Amongst other awards presented to eligible crews will be:

National, Ecurie & Golden Oldie Team Prizes
The Ladies’ Prize
The Charity Shield
The Veteran’s Prize & Concours awards for both Trial & Tour
The Absolute Beginners’ Trophy
The Test Pilot’s & Clockwatcher’s Trophies
Most appropriately dress crew
The Spirit of the Rally award

The Classic Tour

Those looking for a less demanding and gentler drive around Scotland are invited to compete in the Classic Car Tour. You will have your own Tour Master, and Main Controls and lunch halts common to both sections of the events will ensure that you are as much a part of the Malts as the competitive crews.

Competitors on the Classic Tour cover a shorter route, around 150 miles per day, and are provided with a specially printed map book, detailed but simple route directions, and touring notes of places of interest along the way.

The Scottish Malts Classic Tour provides owners of more precious cars, or those of you not keen on the Reliability Trial, the opportunity to drive around Scotland at a more leisurely pace, with time to take in the sites and to shop! You are free to visit whichever attractions you wish, but make sure you arrive at the hotel in time for dinner!

Following requests from crews expressing an interest in learning more about Reliability Trials, entrants on the Classic Tour will have the opportunity on one particular day to drive the roads used by entrants on the Trial.

The Malts Rack

Introduced for the first time in 2003, the Malts rack provides competitors on both the Reliability Trial and the Classic Tour with a unique souvenir of the event. The hand made wooden rack, which forms an unusual but very special finisher’s award, is provided to each competitor as they cross the finishing line. The rack has spaces for the whisky miniatures each crew member will have collected on route.

Accommodation

The 2007 event will make use of the Highlander, less than ten minutes walk from Stirling Castle, and the Highlands Hotel within the Aviemore Highland Resort; both are four star hotels offering a high standard of accommodation and hospitality.

Getting There

The event has been structured so that most competitors need only take a week off work. Stirling is within a day’s drive from most parts of the United Kingdom, and daily ferry crossings to Europe will allow most continental crews to travel to and from the event over a weekend. The services of a travel specialist have once more been retained in order to be able to assist continental competitors with their travel arrangements, and to ensure the best rates are available.

How to Enter

To ensure your place on this most enjoyable of events is secure, and to join those who have already reserved a place, complete the entry form (available from the HERO office and on-line at our web site) and return with your payment without delay. As in the past, generous discounts are offered to those who book early.
