Day 5 - Enniskillen to Limavady
During the previous day’s rallying, Car 108, Michael Harcourt and Jenny Allen, found that their Bentley Corniche Convertible was suffering with steering problems while crawling in traffic in Enniskillen. Luckily they found themselves creeping along next to a large Motor Factor and even luckier the parts were available at this garage, so they called the AA who fitted the parts, with haste, allowing them to get straight back into the Rally. The route on Day 5 took competitors along the shore of the picturesque Lower Loch Erne before entering the Republic at Pettigoe. The roads at this point became bumpier over The Black Gap to the edge of Donegal town, where a lot of the day’s route ran through the County of that name. The old special stage of Lough Eske, used on the Circuit of Ireland was revisited by competitors en route to the Blue Stack Mountains and a scenic coastal drive around the Rossbeg peninsula (another former rally stage) then into Narin for the lunch halt at the Lake House Hotel. After lunch an Observed Regularity Section took place on scenic lanes allowing views over Gweenbarra Bay before looping round to the north and into Thorr. The final Regularity Section of the Day shadowed the great peak of Errigal taking competitors through twists and turns for almost an hour, after which the competitors entered Northern Ireland near Londonderry and onto the Best Western White Horse Hotel. So after day 5 Geoff Stewart and Peter Murray had regained their lead in their MGB Roadster clocking up only 427 penalty marks and the Wignalls had fallen to 2nd position with 495 penalty marks but are still hot on their heels. Michael and Lorna Harrison in their Triumph TR4 are in 3rd position closely followed by Charles and Kit Graves with only a mere 70 penalty marks in it. |
